In the course of this workshop, participants will learn about the possibilities of animating the inanimate matter that is puppetry. From simple objects and materials, through finger, glove and tabletop puppets, to the most complex string marionettes, a variety of techniques will be introduced in order to show how the combination of design and movement produces the illusion of life. This introductory workshop will (among other topics) touch upon the questions of the anatomy of abstract and figurative puppets; the basic distinction between inanimate objects, props, masks and puppets; the complex relationship of puppet and puppeteer; and the language; of puppetry. The aim of the seminar is to provide participants with an overview of the fundamental principles of puppetry by allowing them hands-on experience with different techniques and offering an insider’s view into the workings of the puppet theater.

Advanced Level:
In the course of this Marionette Manipulation masterclass, participants will learn about the logic of different marionette control systems--and, based on their prior experience, will practice the basic or more advanced skills of string puppet movement and manipulation. They will examine how the elements of construction and manipulation translate to movement, gestures, and, ultimately, artistic expression. By the end of the workshop beginners will understand the basic principles of marionette manipulation and will have the skills necessary to be able to practice on their own, while advanced students or professionals will learn about new techniques and possibilities for furthering their expertise.
