Everyday Life in a Syrian Village
(in collaboration with essayist Saadallah Wannus)
Syrian Arab Republic,1974
Arabic, with French and English subtitles – 85 min
The first documentary to present an unabashed critique of the impact of the Syrian government’s agricultural and land reforms, Everyday Life in a Syrian Village delivers a powerful jab at the state’s conceit of redressing social and economic inequities. As Saadallah Wannus mentioned in his 1975 essay documenting the film’s journey, “The Story of an Arrested Film,” it was not just an attempt to produce a documentary; both he and Amiralay attempted to forge a school of filmmaking that is committed to social justice. Rarely seen but hugely influential, Everyday Life in a Syrian Village remains a landmark in the history of Arab cinema.
