A reading group led and moderated by writer and art critic: Ismail fayed

Concerning Violence and the Image comes as part of CIC's reading groups series that aim at raising discussions and debates concerning the production, consumption and circulation of the image. It is no secret that the representation of violence in the image, whether it is photography, documentary, media and so on, is on the rise in Egypt and the Middle East. This intensification of violent content is accompanied by a breakthrough in producing and consuming the image (whether through smartphones or dissemination via social media) and the rate and speed by which it is shared and spread. The Concerning Violence and the Image Reading Group shall deal with a selection of texts and reflections on the meaning of violence, restaging or sharing it within that ever expanding scope and the effects that that might have on our future understanding of the image and our relationship to it. We are hoping through these readings and discussions to open new vistas to understand the image and to find different ways in dealing with such content and its consequences.

CIC invites all those who are interested in engaging in dialogue and discussion on the image and violence to apply to the reading group by sending any kind of an image (photograph, video, screen shot, etc) that represents what violence might mean to you, along with a brief description as to why you chose this image to info@ciccairo.com. Please also include your full name, email, and phone number.

The reading group will be held in Arabic
Deadline is 18 March 2015.
Selected participants will be notified 26 March 2015.

The reading group will start on Wednesday 8 April 2015, 7 pm and meet the four following Wednesdays at the same time.
