Urban Design Summer Workshop - Regenerating Public Space: Creating Sustainable Diversity
(This event has passed)
(rescheduled)

1. INTRODUCTION

Cairo University has always played a key role in the effective continuous contribution for achieving Egypt’s social and economic development before and after the 25th of January 2011 Revolution. Being an important landmark, the urban context surrounding the main campus and extending to the Nahda Statue provides an expression of diversity, in integrating a hub of different political, social and economic activities.

Accordingly, this concept points out the role of the urban streets surrounding Cairo University main campus as a main public space that needs to be re-thought. The Generation of Diversity in urban spaces seeks to assess how the: physical, economic, and social attributes inter-relate in sustainable urban context.

Space is produced through the interactions of several groups of actors, including planners, state agents and users. Hence, we cannot expect to dictate a vision of what an area should be and view it implemented. We should rather work through the logic in which a particular space has been produced, understanding the multiplicity of forces that go through its production, and working to strengthen or weaken some of these forces.

2. TASK

Therefore, the main task of this workshop is to boost creative ideas for the urban context design of the spaces and the streets confronting the Cairo University main campus; the study area is shown in this map.

The objective of the workshop is to ensure that the space is used as envisaged, and help reduce anti-social behavior that could otherwise erode its success.

This is achieved by: demonstrating how the space is currently used by different people at different times of day and night, and analyze all the integrated transportation networks and circulation. It is also worth considering the extent to which the use of the space complements or competes with surrounding land uses, provides choice and value for users, oand finally affects the town center experience as a whole.

These creative ideas should be elaborated through three main phases:

First, Documentation and Analysis: of all physical, economic, and social attributes in the study area.

Second, Strategy and Vision Formulation: for the integration between the study area and its urban context.

Third, Boosting Creative Ideas: for the improvement of the spaces in the study area along with the proposal for the management and maintenance programs
