PANEL DISCUSSION
With Andres Lepik (Museum of Architecture TU Munich), Anna Heringer (Studio Anna Heringer), Adel Fahmy (Modern Sciences and Arts University Cairo)
Moderation: Omar Nagati (CLUSTER)

The exhibition "Think Global, Build Social" presented in Cairo was developed from a previous exhibition presented in 2010 at The Museum of Modern Art in New York "Small Scale, Big Change. New Architectures of Social Engagement" which focussed on the social relevance of contemporary practices. Its thesis is that architects can start social change through design projects.

But this change can only happen when the role of the architect changes as well from a top-down planner to an engaged activist. Basic questions of this panel are: What is the role of the architect in a situation of global conflicts, large scale humane migrations and extreme urbanization? Can architects just do "business as usual" and wait for commissions to come in or should they start initiatives themselves to connect the profession closer to the real needs of people? Can small projects really have a large-scale impact? What is the importance of architectural education in this situation?

Exhibition and panel discussion are organized in cooperation with CLUSTER - Cairo Lab for Urban Studies.
