Social Justice Film Festival: Bitter Lake
Bitter Lake is the most recent film by renowned BBC documentarian Adam Curtis. The film analyzes the complex historical relationships between the United States, the United Kingdom, Russia, Saudi Arabia, and Afghanistan—and the narratives propagated about them by the mainstream media.
Bitter Lake argues that politicians have simplified the discourse on global issues, and that the media has followed suit, both having lost power to financial institutions and corporations. The film links the rise of ISIS in Iraq and Syria to the crude, regional brush strokes of Western politicians failing to grasp the nuanced, complex realities of cultural difference even when they think they are trying to help, and being undone by their own historical self-interest.
