Panel discussion led by Florian Seidel and Florentine Visser

Dutch housing architecture has played a pivotal role in the development of modern architecture in the 20th century. Many building projects by Dutch designers have inspired architects and the public around the world. Although Dutch housing is often associated with large-scale schemes, like housing blocks with differentiated access systems and varied typologies, or vast city extensions, the underlying architectural ideas were often developed on a much smaller scale, at the level of the individual housing unit or even ephemeral pavilions.
This research project strives to analyse and present the innovative design principles that laid the basis for much larger schemes. The design ideas originating from the Netherlands continue to inspire students of architecture and practitioners around the world, often in very different frameworks of physical, social, and environmental context.

The focus of the panel discussion will be on the design level: what architects can do in their approach to create interesting, sustainable residential architecture. The discussion will be moderated by Florentine Visser, a Dutch architect based in Jordan.

The panel includes:
- Introduction by Florian Seidel (German University in Cairo (GUC)) to provide a background on the models/exhibition of the student work.
- Harrie van Helmond (www.vanhelmondzuidam.nl) a Dutch architect with a pragmatic approach for quality residental projects, not only on the‚ villa level, but bridging to the scale of the surrounding neighbourhood.
- Eng. Mostafa Nasser – Architect NEW GIZA (www.newgiza.com), Sustainable Residential Architecture in Egypt.

Starting from the iconic works of Gerrit Rietveld and J.J.P. Oud, and leading to contemporary architecture by Rem Koolhaas, Christian Rapp, and VMX, the exhibition shows a wide range of projects and the development of residential and pavilion architecture by Architects in the Netherlands.
