Wail Gzoly – Egypt – 2013

In Erki we travel to the south of Egypt with the young Nubian Shadi Fikri Kashif. The 27 years old economy graduate was born and raised in Cairo after his family was evicted from their home village during the construction of the High Dam & the Nuba Lake which caused the submergence of dozens of Nubian villages.

The Nubians where forced to migrate to deserted areas far away from the Nile which always played a vital role in their life and culture. Others left for Cairo, Alexandria & the Suez Canal cities. The Egyptian government didn’t provide any of the promised compensations and 5 decades after their forced eviction, Nubians are still fighting for their rights.

With his documentary Erki, the young director Wail Gzoly depicts the Nubian relegation trough a road trip that brings us back to the Nubian roots that go back more than 7000 years ago. We get to know a community that still preserves its own language and that has traditions and a culture that differ from that of Egypt.

Director Wail Gzoly will attend the screening and join us for a Q&A about his documentary after the screening. You’re most welcome to join!
