In Memoriam: John Berger
Jonas qui aura 25 ans en l’an 200
Alain Tanner
Switzerland-France, 1976
French, with English and Arabic subtitles – 110min

Directed by the famous Swiss director Alain Tanner and written by Tanner and John Berger, the film follows the lives of several men and women in their 30s as they confront the slim gains of the 'revolutionary' sixties: Max, a dissatisfied copy editor; Myriam, a redhead into tantric sex; and Marie, a supermarket checker who gives unauthorized discounts to the elderly, search for renewed meaning on a communal farm. Their paths cross as they try to cope with the capitalist system in the wake of the social and political tumult of May 1968. The title character, a six-year-old child named Jonas who appears towards the end of the film, is the carrier of their hopes for the future.
Before the screening, film critic and festival curator Necati Sönmez will give a short presentation about John Berger, the co-writer of the film, who passed away at the beginning of this year. Berger was not only a distinguished art critic, poet, painter and writer, but also a script writer involved in many films including the legendary BBC series “Ways of Seeing.”

This screening is organized with the support of the Embassy of Switzerland in Cairo and Documentarist--Istanbul Documentary Days and is dedicated to Berger's legacy.
