Alternative Techniques Workshop

This will be an introductory workshop in the Gum Bichromate printing process. Gum Bichromate is a 19th century light sensitive printing process which mixes gum Arabic, potassium bichomate, and watercolor. In this workshop we will be making digital negatives, mixing and coating emulsion, and exposing and developing images.

The Workshop will also provide participants with the opportunity to do Lumen prints. 

Note: Participants should bring digital or printed photos and drawings, as well as leaves or parts of plants, lace, fabrics, or any other (semi-)translucent material or objects they would like to use for the Gum Bichromate and Lumen print techniques.

About the instructor:
Awde is currently an Assistant Professor of photography at Virginia Commonwealth University in Doha, Qatar and co-director of marra.tein, a residency and research initiative in Beirut. George received his BFA in painting from Massachusetts College of Art (2004) and his MFA in photography from Yale University’s School of Art (2009). His awards include the Aaron Siskind Foundation's Individual Photographer's Fellowship (2012), Philadelphia Museum of Art's Photography Portfolio Competition (2012), Fulbright US Scholar Grant to Egypt (2012-2013), Alice Kimball English Travel Fellowship (2009), and The Richard Benson Scholarship for Excellence in Photography (2008). In 2015 Awde will be an artist in residence at Light Work in Syracuse, New York. 

Awde’s work has been exhibited internationally, including his third solo exhibition, His Passing Cover, which was exhibited in 2014 as part of the 15th FotoFest International Biennial in Houston, Texas.
