Still Recording/Keep Recording is an experimental documentary diptych. The first part, titled Keep Recording, captures an image of Egyptian society in 2008 through a succession of seemingly banal scenes. The creator of the movie, Bassem Yousri, randomly filmed scenes from his daily life. Those scenes included conversations with friends and family, as well as scenes of different happenings in Cairo’s streets. Indirectly and quite sarcastically, the movie tries to put everyday life in 2008 Cairo in a social and political context.
The second part of the diptych, titled Still Recording, presents in the same manner an image of the American society, where Yousri lived for 5 years, in 2009 during a pivotal time in the American history as Obama ran for and won the presidential elections to become the first African American president of the United States. The movie is Yousri’s attempt to explore and examine the “other” while, throughout the diptych, challenging stereotypical notions in both cultures, the Egyptian one and the American one, about one another
