Athar Lina Initiative - Shopfronts project
Call for volunteers to help paint a shop in Historic al-Khalifa Street with the help of al-Khalifa's children.

Volunteers will work on the following:
1. Decorating the shop with graffiti and calligraphy
2. Plastering and painting the shop

The program is open to all, those with artisitic or technical skills and those who wish to learn the basics of paint and plasterworks, graffiti and Arabic calligraphy.

It is also a chance to participate in an activity that is beneficial to the community and children of a historic neighbourhood.

Work is over two consecutive weekends - 1-2 and 8-9 December.
Weekend 1 (1-2 December; 9 am - 5 pm)
- Cleaning, plastering and painting the shop facade
- Basic training on graffiti and calligraphy for beginners while advanced participants work on the design.

Weekend 2 (8-9 December; 9 am - 5 pm)
- Calligraphy and graffiti work
- Opening event as part of (Spend the Day in Khalifa 5) a tourist promotion event that includes guided tours, street performances, sport activities and a craft exhibition.

Project beneficiaries:
- Al-Khalifa's artisans and skilled workers who will be paid, will acquire new skills and will get a chance to give back to their community.
- Al-Khalifa's children (11-16 year olds) who will acquire new skills and will get a chance to give back to their community.
- Al-Khalifa's shop owners whose establishment will be upgraded potentially bringing more customers
- Al-Khalifa community whose streets will be improved through art.

About Athar Lina
Athar Lina is a participatory conservation initiative to establish modalities of citizen participation in heritage conservation based on a vision of heritage as a resource not a burden. Activities include conservation and rehabilitation of historic buildings, heritage education for children and socio-economic development through promotion of tourism, development of crafts, and urban development through street art and improvement of open spaces and services. It is based in al-Khalifa in Historic Cairo and run by the Built Environment Collective|Megawra in partnership with the Egyptian Ministry of Antiquities and Cairo Governorate.
