As part of the third and last section of Hybrid Reels, Zawya’s first program dedicated to non-fiction film, we are pleased to invite you to the screening of Concerning Violence. Directed by Goran Olsen, the film is a stunning visual adaptation of Frantz Fanon’s The Wretched of the Earth.

The film will be followed by a discussion led by Professor Hanan Sabea, chair of the sociology and anthropology department at the American University in Cairo.

About the film:

Narrated by Ms Lauryn Hill, Concerning Violence is both an archive-driven documentary covering the most daring moments in the struggle for liberation in the Third World, as well as an exploration into the mechanisms of decolonization through text from Frantz Fanon’s The Wretched of the Earth. Fanon’s landmark book, written over 50 years ago, is still a major tool for understanding and illuminating the neocolonialism happening today, as well as the violence and reactions against it.
Frantz Fanon is a leading thinker and a key figure in what is now known as postcolonial studies. He was an active member in the Algerian revolution and a strong critic of imperialism. HIs book The Wretched of the Earth is a product of his experiences on the ground in Algeria. After his death the book became a sort of a manifesto for revolutionary movements all over the world.
