Mission Statement

Founded in 1934, The British Council opened its first overseas office in Egypt back in 1938.

Since then, our work has aimed to build and develop long-term relationships with governments, organisations and people to provide mutual benefit. All our work is concerned with people and involves quality and customer care.

We believe that connecting young people across cultures creates genuine mutual trust and understanding. Learning from one another and working together helps us all build secure, more prosperous and sustainable futures.

Celebrating 75 years in 2009, the British Council is the UK’s international organisation for educational opportunities and cultural relations.

We create international opportunities for the people of the UK and other countries and build trust between them worldwide.

Our main areas of work are in the Arts, English, Education and Society, and in the process we contribute to the security and prosperity of the UK and the countries where we work.

Our work also covers other areas such as Schools, Science, Skills, Sports and Youth and Community
